Hunter's Highlights

This has been another busy week here at Ardmore High School. This week has been National FFA Week and our students have had several opportunities to celebrate. Friday students were allowed to drive their tractors to school and a FFA officer has said the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. Students have participated in several “dress up” days including camo day, hat day and others. Mr. McKay does an excellent job with the FFA and we are fortunate to have such a strong FFA club on our campus.

Ms. DeGraffenreid will be taking a group of students to Birmingham next week to watch the Alabama Theater Flamingo Ballet. This is a Spanish cultural experience complete with Spanish music and dance. This is an excellent experience for our Spanish students to learn more about the Spanish culture.

The annual Ardmore High School Talent Show was held Friday, February 26, 2010 in the new gym. Several of our students displayed their talent this year with a group consisting of Jacob Black, Kendall Bailey, Colin Barts and Ben Rhinehart taking the top spot. A duet of Shelby Goldsmith, and Ben Rhinehart took second place and Jacob Petritsch placed 3rd. Our students behaved wonderfully at the Talent Show and the proceeds went to the soccer program. Ms. Wiley does a wonderful job with the show and we appreciate her efforts.

Spring sports are in full swing and we are very excited about our teams. This season looks very promising with all of our teams doing wonderfully in this very young spring season. In spite of the frigid weather Ardmore continues to have good support for all of its sports programs. The Winter Sports Banquet will be March 2 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam will be given the week of March 1st and we know the hard work of our teachers and students will pay off when they take the test. We want to encourage all students taking the exams to have a restful week so they can give their best effort. This is a very big exam for our students and we want everything to go smoothly for them so they can finish their high school career successfully.

Hunter's Highlights

The second semester of school is flying by with March right around the corner. Basketball season is completed and spring sports are in full swing. All of our basketball teams had a wonderful season. Ardmore was well represented in the county tournament, area tournament, sub-region, and regional tournament. All of our coaches and players did a wonderful job and are to be congratulated. Our girl’s varsity team made the Elite 8 in the state by becoming runners-up in the Northwest Regional Tournament. We are very proud of all of our student athletes. The Winter Sports Banquet will be March 2nd at 6:30 in the cafeteria.

The AHS Scholar's Bowl Team placed 3rd at the ASCA District Competition at Wallace State on Friday. The team will now advance to the regional competition to be held on March 13. Mr. Lewis and the Scholar’s Bowl Team is off to a great start and we look forward to the regional competition as well as the county competition.

Our physics students have constructed air cannons and have been using these to supplement their physics class instruction. The classes have done trial runs and calculated the speed of the projectiles and are now making calculations to try and hit a target. The students are doing wonderfully and we may have a few future engineers in the group.

Our MS students continue to excel in archery in their physical education classes. The students are taught safety and shooting technique and are doing wonderfully. Coach Newton and Coach South are doing a wonderful job of instructing our students.

Spring is certainly upon us and athletic events, beauty walks, proms, graduation, and many other activities will be upon us before we know it. All of the extra curricular activities are vital to our students, but we must be careful to not forsake academics which are the reason we have school. I hope everyone has a great week!

Our girl’s varsity basketball team won their sub-region game and earned a spot in the Regional Tournament at Wallace State College Thursday, November 18 at 6:00 p.m. Our boys play their sub-region game Friday, February 12, 2010 to determine whether or not they advance to the Regional Tournament. Ardmore has great fan support and we are hoping for a huge crowd at Columbia High School to support our boy’s team. Please check the website to get the latest updates on the Regional Tournament plans.

Spring sports are upon us as golf, soccer, softball, and baseball are preparing to begin their seasons. Please check the website for the current schedules. Spring sports fans are accustomed to frequent cancellations due to inclement weather and are encouraged to sign up for our “Twitter” account to stay up to date on the changes.

Jostens presented our sophomores with information regarding class rings. It will not be very long until graduation and everyone advances another grade level, getting closer and closer to their graduation date. We wish everyone luck in their academic progress for the remainder of the year.

Hunter's Highlights

Another great week at Ardmore High School has passed. We actually went an entire week without a weather event altering the schedule. Our 9th graders toured the Tech. School to help them make decisions in the pre-registering process. Pre-registration is a very important time for our students and we hope everyone will take time to sit down and discuss their future plans carefully.

Our physics students have been very busy this week as well. The physics students are investigating projectile motion and their task has been to design and build an air cannon, determine the influence of the launch angle on the flight of a projectile, then calculate the precise angle and muzzle velocity needed to hit a target. This is a very good learning activity for our students and we know they had a good time doing it.

Our middle school students are having a great experience and enjoying a new challenge as Mrs. Katheryn Newton teaches Archery during P.E. Classes! She says, "Archery is so much fun! All of the kids can participate and have fun plus success at the same time! This is a life long sport, which we are teaching 6th-8th graders, that puts everybody on equal ground. A 6th grade student could compete with a 12th grade student. Archery is a sport were you don't have to be the best athlete but have the willingness to succeed and develop the skills to be a competitor in archery.

Our basketball teams are finishing strong in their pursuit for post season play. Our boys and girls have advanced to the finals of the Area Tournament which ensures them moving to the next level. Believe it or not, spring sports are underway and have begun practicing in spite of the weather.

I just want to remind you to keep updated with Twitter and the school blog. The twitter site is, “ardmorehs” so join Twitter and you can follow us. Also visit our blog at http://www.ardmorehighschool.blogspot.com/ for the latest updates. Ardmore is a wonderful place to live and attend school and we are thankful for our community, and parent support.
